Historical Elegance centro Oasis
Built in the 1770s and meticulously restored and revived in 2017-2019, Casa del Obispo is located in the heart of the historic center of San Miguel de Allende. The house’s name (“obispo” means bishop in Spanish) comes from its famous 19 th century resident, José de María Jesús Díez de Sollano y Dávalos, who was the first native-born bishop in Mexico and also commissioned the flamboyant and beloved neogothic façade of the Parroquia de San Miguel Archángel in the town’s main square. The Parrochia, whose distinctive towers are visible from the house, is one of the most photographed churches in Mexico and has become a symbol of this UNESCO World Heritage City.
Description
Casa del Obispo, designed in collaboration with renown interior design firm Fisher- Weisman, is a colorful, comfortable home that faithfully honors its colonial past but embraces the life of a modern family who loves to entertain.
Nearly all of the building materials –its terra cotta flooring, the extensive Talavera tile, windows, doors, wrought iron railings, reclaimed wood cabinetry, its 10 stone fireplaces, door hardware, plumbing fixtures, lighting fixtures— were made by artisans in San Miguel or nearby. Much of the furniture too was either made locally or purchased from local dealers or auction houses in Mexico City.
The house showcases a collection of modern art, but the pictures in the dining room are a tribute to the house’s famous resident bishop and feature images of bishops from the 18 th century to the present day –some formal and serious, some whimsical and irreverent.
The landscape features palms, jacarandas, oranges, lemons, limes, kumquats, figs, specimen agaves, and herbs for cooking. The sala abierta (outdoor living room) overlooks the handset tiled pool and has a cocktail terrace above with panoramic views that include the towers of the Parroquia and the countryside. Now shaded by trees and refreshed by fountains, the terraces are perfect for morning coffees and evening dinners under the stars.
